Affiliates

Here’s the deal: this website costs me money, personally. Hosting, time, and domain registration all factor into this total cost. You’ll notice that there are no ads popping up, no ads in the sidebar, and no ads in articles. This greatly hurts my ability to recover money, but I’m alright with that, because I’m not doing this to make money. However, I’d like to at least recover my costs.

In order to do this, I primarily use the Amazon Associate program. Basically, you’ll notice links to Amazon for some stuff that I think is cool or relevant. When you click on it, your computer will load a cookie into your cache. If you order something from Amazon within 30 days of clicking the link, I’ll get a small percentage (like 6-8%) of the purchase price.

Let me be clear: this does not increase the cost to you. You will buy stuff from Amazon at the same price as everyone else, the seller just takes an advertising cut in their revenue. You can also delete this cookie by clearing your cookies (this is achieved in various ways, depending on which browser you’re using–if you don’t know how, Google it). If you delete your cookies in order to prevent me from getting a dollar from your purchase price, you’re a pretty big jerk, no lie. That’s basically like going into a bookstore and reading a book for free, then walking out. Is it legal? Yeah. Does it make you sort of a jerk? Yeah.

In order to ensure that you return to Electrogent, I have to keep advertising at a minimum. The least you can do is let me soak up a few cents or a dollar from the revenue going to someone else for something that you would have bought anyways. You help me out with that, and I’ll help you out with keeping obnoxious ads at a minimum. Deal?
